Hi Rodney,
My colleagues and I ( we are all MIS analysts), were trying to understand how stdev works, we banged our heads against a lot of sites and people but no one could explain the way you did.
Kudos to you... keep up the great work.
Regards

Dear Rodney,
Your website advice on standard deviation and calculation is like a window of understanding opening on a dim lit dark room. It has helped me understand the process and mechanisms for calulating this statistical term and how it can be applied Thanks so much Rodney for taking the time to post your site.

I am an academic turned professional Quality Control Engineer for the largest construction contractor engaged in reconstruction in post-conflict Afghanistan. After a futile struggle trying to teach the concept of statistical control to several young Afghan Engineering graduates with limited familiarity with the English language, I almost gave up but accidentally stumbled across your web page.
I thought it was a God-sent relief and literally word-for-word had your concept for Standard Deviation translated by an enterprising interpreter.
Voila! My raw recruits got the message and are manning QC posts at several key construction projects across this country!
Thank you, Sir, Rodney.

I wanted to say "thank you" - you helped me to understand Standard Deviation better than my financial college book did. My book makes it seem so complicated. You made it seem almost too easy!
Thanks

I appreciate you so much for providing a simple, concise explanation.
I was able to go through it quickly, practice with your example, and get back to work with relatively little interruption.
Don't see that often....
Thanks again,

Thanks for such a great explanation on how to calculate standard deviation.
Excel does it for you, but your step-by-step example with temperature samples really helps to clarify the formulae.

Thanks Rodney, for your clear, step-by-step explanation of the Standard Deviation formula process.
I did a search on the subject and found several discussions, but NONE as clear and unassuming as yours.
Thanks for the help in time of need.

Hi Rodney
Thanks very much for your site! You will need to believe me when I tell you I received a Bachelor of Science from the Faculty of Engineering and Mathematics in 2000 (I "equal topped" the course!) – wait for it – without ever doing statistics (I followed a different stream of maths).
You can probably understand my embarrassment when a friend asked me to help with her first semester, first year Psychology assignment that needed to include ‘Standard Variation’ analysis
Thank heaven for you.
...
Yours gratefully ...

Rodney..I have searched the web for the difference in Standard vs Population Deviation and your web site explained it so very well.
Population includes all of the values..Thank you.
On the TI-83 Plus calculator..they give both and we were not sure which to use...sometimes the answers on the Discovering Algebra test generator give Standard and sometimes Population
but Population Deviation is nowhere in the book that I can find ...

... Your web site is great!

RE: Standard Deviation in Excel Spreadsheets
I was stuck looking for the correct formula (procedure) to duplicate the Excel StDev formula. We're migrating some things from Excel to VB that required it. Your document explained it quickly and completely.
Thanks a million,

... Your website has saved me countless hours of work. I am a Clinical Laboratory Director in Phoenix, Arizona, working in a smaller, privately owned hospital.
Laboratory statistics are a major part of my job that give me a frightful headache! Since budgets are also part of my job,
I have not been able to purchase the software I need to perform the calculations.
Figuring out control ranges and calculating normal patient values is a headache in itself.
Before I discovered your website, I was doing it the old fashioned way (calculating SD, CV).
I purchased 2 books on Excel, however, it's time consuming to study and pretend to like Excel (which I don't).
Your 7 step intructions have shed a new light on things for me regarding Excel and my job.
Thank you so much...
Most Sincerely,
- Christopher G. Clinical Laboratory Director, Phoenix, AZ
